MNG Elects Mike Best as new Chairman

2nd April 2014

MNG is pleased to announce former Wood & Grieve Engineers chief executive officer Mike Best (pictured right) as the company’s new non-executive chairman.

Mr Best joined the MNG board as a non-executive director in May 2013 and was unanimously voted into the role of non-executive chairman at an extraordinary MNG board meeting held on Friday 21 March 2014. The meeting also saw the board accept the formal resignations of non-executive directors and MNG company founders John McMullen and Gerry Nolan who had remained on the MNG board following their retirements from the company’s day-to-day business operations in September 2013.

Mr Best replaces Mr McMullen as non-executive chairman.

"This was truly a big step in the life of MNG," MNG chief executive officer / managing director Scott Anderson said of Mr McMullen and Mr Nolan’s resignations from the board and Mr Best’s appointment as MNG’s new non-executive chairman.

"On behalf of the MNG board and all the staff it is without question that I extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to John and Gerry for their mateship, guidance and leadership they have offered over their 25 years at MNG. They are two truly remarkable gentlemen and, in wishing John and Gerry all the very best in their retirement, there is of course the open invitation for them to drop in for a chat or a coffee in the years ahead. I personally look forward to continuing to see them in and around our company."

Mr Best spent 24 years with Wood & Grieve Engineers, commencing in 1988 as a project engineer before rising through the ranks to become the firm’s CEO in July 2003. He led the national engineering consultancy company until 30 June 2012 when he announced his retirement from fulltime commitments.

Mr Best said he was excited to be taking over the chairmanship from Mr McMullen and wished him and Mr Nolan the best in their retirements from the MNG board 25 years after the pair opened the doors to what has grown to become Western Australia’s largest locally and privately owned survey and spatial information consultancy firm.

"John and Gerry have left an enduring legacy in Western Australian business, not just within the land surveying sector," Mr Best said.

"When they started the company 25 years ago they did so because they saw a need for alternative surveying services in the land development sector in WA. Their foresight led to a range of new processes and procedures being implemented in conjunction with relevant authorities to help streamline the production of new titles while helping ensure costs were contained for land developers and, ultimately, the public who later purchased the blocks of land.

"Their commitment to innovation also saw the company become one of the first Australian companies to purchase and utilise Terrestrial Laser Scanning technology and customised, in-house designed Mobile Laser Scanning technologies.

"John and Gerry laid solid foundations for MNG and, with MNG celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, the company is in as strong a position as ever to continue to build on the success and hard work John and Gerry oversaw and inspired since 1989."
